Travel Medicine All patients requiring travel advice need to be seen by a Practice Nurse. This ideally should be done 4-6 weeks prior to travel. A travel health consultation is not just about giving any vaccines that may be required. Advice is also given on the prevention of many infections that cannot be prevented by a vaccine. Only 5% of the infections that you may come across on your travels are vaccine preventable. One of the main infections is traveller's diarrhoea. There is currently no vaccine to prevent this. The risk of contracting this can be greatly reduced by a few simple measures. All this and more will be discussed at the appointment. It will also include advice on any malaria prophylaxis that may be required. Vaccines that are available are: All the above are carried out at this surgery. There may be a charge for some of the vaccines, please ask the receptionist. Please bring with you information regarding dates of travel and country(s) to be visited. Many leaflets are available and up to date on-line information is also utilised during the consultation if necessary. |
